Brief: Design a friendly museum experience for children with ASD.
Time: October
In the past few weeks, we have done a lot of research on children with ASD, and each of us had gained a lot of insights and generated many design ideas based on this.
Brainstorming --> System Design
I knew the importance of preparation and familiarity is essential for children with ASD to go to a new and unfamiliar place from Gabby. Hence, my ideas were about designing a planner for the pre-visit stage, combined with real-time navigation in the museum. Families of children with ASD can know which areas of the museum are sensory-friendly for their children and then make a detailed plan before visiting them. In addition, if children feel overwhelmed, they can use real-time navigation to go to quiet areas in the museum.

Manali came up with the idea of redesigning the website of Science Museum to create clearer navigation for the families of children with ASD, and design printable visual cards for them. Svaney wanted to design interactive booklets for onsite and post-visiting.

Since we focused on the different stages of the visit, we decided to synthesize our designs to create a system design. We made a journey map for a better explanation.

Feedback
Alastair and Tiffany had very positive feedback for our research. Considering the limited time, Alastair advised us to focus on one stage and make an in-depth design. He also kindly reminded us that we need to figure out whether it is helpful for children with ASD, whether it is what they need, and do not make any assumptions before testing. Tiffany thought the post visiting part is a bit split from others and suggested that we design for caregivers to reduce their burden.
Next step, we will figure out which stage we will focus on and make some prototypes to validate our ideas.
